Do you, perchance, have an extra right-hand slash between Arthur and Stephen
in the PAF database record itself? That would likely cause it. Not real
sure. --Fred H. in MN

Dear Listers

Just wondering if someone could help. I'm doing a Kinship Report and I find
when I look at the list in readiness to print out I'm finding some names not
in order. For example say for McCORMICK Arthur Stephen I can see it listed as
Arthur (in the surname place) and then Stephen MCCORMICK. In total there are
about 10 surnames listed as such. The puzzle is that in my PAF5.2 software
they are entered correctly. It's just when I do the Kinship Report for the
Companion that I find the trouble. It's probably just a case of making a short
correction somewhere in the software but I don't know how. Would be pleased if
anyone could suggest. Thanks. Maureen

Maureen,

PAF Companion is not a flexible as PAF. It expects names to be in this
format:
First Middle /Last/ If the names are not in this format it may be a problem.

Others on this forum may have other insights.

I am pretty sure the record pointer is the RIN. RIN numbers are used for
internal tracking in
the database and are not really useful for other things other than short
term changes and all.
You might try the RIN (as a record pointer) and see the result. Bill

It can't be the RIN number, as my highest RIN number is 35191, and the
record pointer number was 14880610; it was something in notes.

Thanks.
Kathy

I get that same error message about every three months. I enter a new
"dummy" individual. Then run Check (not Check -Fix). If same error message
I then delete the "dummy" individual and that fixes the problem. Be sure and
Delete the dummy individual.

I tend to run check/repair 3 or 4 times rather than once. If the problem
remains, I export everything as a gedcom and import it into a new PAF file
with a new name. (After a backup, as Bill Davis mentioned.)

I ran check/repair about 5 or 6 times, and the error kept returning. I
finally did export everything and then import it again. It seems to be
working fine now.

I really needed to do an export anyway, as I wanted to clean the database up
a little, and this works.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
Kathy

Common Courtesies

Read carefully what you receive, to make sure that you understand the message and read carefully what you send, to make sure that your message will not be misunderstood.

Many readers have very limited and in some cases expensive electronic mail facilities. Be particularly careful not to cause unnecessary traffic, or to send unnecessarily long messages.

Junk Mail, Viruses and Hoaxes

Do not post virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages and the like. If you get a message that requests, often urgently, that you spread the message far and wide, that's a good sign to delete it.

For information on virus hoaxes and urban legends see Symantec Security Response: Hoaxes.

Patience And Tolerance

Remember that not all readers have your native language as their native language, so make allowance for possible misunderstandings and unintended discourtesies. Be tolerant of newcomers; none of us were born knowing all. If you are using humour or sarcasm, be sure to clearly label it as such.

Insults or "flaming" will not be tolerated. If you're unhappy with the content of a posting, please refer the issue to the administrator; do not comment on the list.

Replying To A Message

Feel free to answer questions or provide clarification or comments in response to any posting you see on the list. However, please post replies to the list only if you think your comments will be of interest to other readers and you wish your answer to be sent to all subscribers. Otherwise, you should reply directly to the poster. Do not use the list for personal correspondence.

If you are responding to a message, either include the relevant part of the original message, or make sure you unambiguously refer to the original contents. It is very common for people to read your reply before they read the original message. However, please avoid unnecessarily lengthy quotations from the messages to which you are responding.

Subject Lines

Always include a descriptive, but brief, subject line in your message. Use the subject line to get attention and make sure it describes the main point of your message.

Remember that with many messages each week, many people use the subject line to decide if they should read your message or not. Keep messages to only one subject; second subjects within a single message are often missed.

Only subscribers can post to the list; if you attempt to post to the list from an address which isn't subscribed, your post will not be forwarded to the list.

There are two modes of address available: mail and digest. In mail mode you will receive each posting as a separate message; in digest mode you will receive multiple postings in one message (presently, every 24 hours). You may choose to subscribe to either or both modes.

Select one of the modes below to subscribe or unsubscribe. Ensure the message you send has only the command subscribe or unsubscribe in the body of the message, removing any signatures. The subject line should be left empty.

To change modes, simply unsubscribe from one and subscribe to the other. To post a message to all subscribers to the list, in both mail and digest modes, address to: PAF-5-USERS@rootsweb.com.

Digest Mode in Outlook Express

To view the digest as a single message, as opposed to a collection of separate attachments, select the digest, hold down the [Ctrl] key and press the [F3] key to view the message source.

This page provides general information regarding the Personal Ancestral File 5.x software. If you have anything you would like to add, please contact the mailing list administrator.

Backups

You can convert backup files from the following versions of PAF:

  • 3.x and 4.x; these files have a *.bak extension
  • 5.x; these files have a *.zip extension
To view files created in 3.x and 4.x you need to select the second or third option in the Files of type selector in the Restore utility. After restoring the file the program will prompt you to convert to PAF 5.

Changes Download Feedback Installation

Make a backup of your existing data files!

If you're experiencing problems with the installation, restart your computer and close any (including background) programs that run after startup.

PAF 5.x is distributed with the InstallShield installation software. Errors referencing the program ikernel.exe may be addressed by updating the version of the program. Refer to Install Shield's Knowledge Base article Q105097 to install the latest version of this program. Also see Q105408 and Q104986. These errors may be avoided by uninstalling previous installations of PAF 5.x before installing an update release version.

Lessons

PAF 5.x lessons are available via the FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Service. They are designed to take the beginner through the use of the software with an interactive approach, but should prove valuable to users at all levels of experience.

Printing

If you're experiencing problems printing, you should check for available patches or updates to the printing software you are using. Product support for HP Printers is available here.

RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project

When creating a GEDCOM for uploading to RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project, selecting the PAF 5 export option defaults to the UTF-8 format, which is incompatible. Instead, select Other GEDCOM 5.5 and from the list, select ANSEL.
